More improved technology has necessitated the development of novel techniques to keep children entertained with these devices. What most parents may not realize is that spending too much time in front of a digital screen can create Computer Vision Syndrome, among other health consequences.
What is Computer Vision Syndrome?
Computer Vision Syndrome is also known as Digital Eye Strain and describes a group of symptoms associated with eye and vision problems associated when staring at a digital screen for extended periods. This includes:
- Eye strain
- Dry eyes
- blurry vision
- Inability to focus
- Headaches/ migraines
- Disruption in sleep pattern
How does Blue Light Affect A Child’s Development?
As a child grows and develops, it is critical to play a vital role in ensuring a good transition for them. One of them is cutting back on their screen usage.
According to an American Heart Association study, children and teens aged 8 to 18 spend more than seven hours each day gazing at a computer device.
The American Heart Association suggests that parents limit their children's screen time to no more than two hours per day, which includes smartphone and tablet time.
When children are exposed to blue light for extended amounts of time, they are more likely to develop eye strain, dry eyes, and blurred vision. It will also disrupt sleep patterns and make it difficult to fall asleep at night because the body is unable to produce the sleep-inducing hormone, melatonin.
Other symptoms include difficulty focusing during the day and processing information superficially rather than critically.
Blue Light Blocking Eyewear Protection
Sometimes it is inevitable that a child will spend numerous hours staring at a screen whether at home or at school. To help block blue light exposure, eyewear blue light blocking glasses are a good fit and can be worn all day for the best protection.
If you haven’t got your kid’s eyes tested in the last two years, get it done as soon as possible and provide them with suitable pair of glasses to protect their eyes.
